The Cuban Economy in a New Era

A writer and publisher with decades of prior experience working and teaching at Harvard, Jorge Dominguez informs readers on Latin America’s political, social, and economic developments. In his book The Cuban Economy in a New Era, Jorge I. Dominguez, alongside Omar Everleny Pérez and Lorena Barberia, trace the origins of Cuba’s current economic state, and ways to improve it.

Dominguez, Pérez, and Barberia, while collaborating with fellow economists, first explain the issues affecting Cuba’s economy. Under the leadership of president Raúl Castro, the economy experienced little growth. They speculate on possible causes, including outdated infrastructure, a failing sugar industry, and the agricultural industry’s failure to expand.

The authors then propose solutions to the above problems, in seven major categories. Their plans encompass all levels of scale, from reforms in nationwide economic policy and building better relationships with international financial institutions, to creating support systems for small businesses. The result of over 10 years of collaborations, The Cuban Economy in a New Era was published in 2018 by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.
