A Look at Harvard’s Academy Scholars Program
Writer and publisher Jorge I. Dominguez has authored works over the course of his career that include “Mexico’s Evolving Democracy,” “Routledge Handbook of Latin America in the World,” and “Between Compliance and Conflict.” Also a longtime teacher, Jorge I. Dominguez served as a Harvard professor for nearly five decades. While at Harvard, Mr. Dominguez’ responsibilities included overseeing the selection of Harvard Academy Scholars while chair of the Academy for International and Area Studies.
Since its founding in 1986, the academy has worked to increase the understanding of regional cultures and histories worldwide. In support of this mission, each year the academy identifies four to six outstanding scholars early in their careers to participate in the Academy Scholars Program. Each selected scholar participates in a two -year fellowship during which time they undertake a sustained research project in their chosen field. The program, which is open to recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates, provides an annual stipend to scholars in addition to funding for conference travel, research, assistants, and healthcare coverage.
